£50K A YEAR DOORMAN AT QPR
Thursday 4 March 2004
The new issue of A Kick Up The Rs contains a number of revelations about poor financial management at QPR.
A team representing the fanzine, with a track record in turning round failing businesses and making them more cost-conscious, has met with the QPR board to try and get the directors to sign up to a programme of improvements that would put the club on a better financial footing.
The need for this is illustrated by some shocking examples of how the club is currently run:
For providing a doorman at the main entrance to the club in South Africa Road during office hours, QPR pay Goldrange £50,000 a year.
No-one at the club can even find the Goldrange contract, let alone identify its terms and conditions.
Although Fulham pay us c.£40,000 for every match they play at Loftus Road, QPR are responsible for policing and stadium staffing which cost c.£13,000 per match.
The JD Sports sponsorship deal was worth £27,000 a year to the club, only a fraction of what it costs to run the club's commercial department.
(Deserved credit is given to Mike Pink who has worked wonders at the clubshop and is bringing in profits way above what we made in Division 1.)
All of this is set in a market context by comparing the performance of another Division 2 club where losses have been reduced to a manageable level and where the chief executive also acts as marketing manager and shop manager and still earns less per annum than QPR pay Goldrange for a doorman.
It's a very interesting read indeed.
Incidentally, whilst browsing Goldrange's website, the Boardroom Blues team spotted the following testimonial to the security company's services:
"Fantastic service, excellent to have a company on board that are training their stewards in accordance with F.S.O.A regulations and are F.S.Q. qualified." - Operations Manager, Queens Park Rangers FC.
